B and D – On the Road

Cowpens National Military Park

We toured the Cowpens National Military Park on Saturday. It preserves a major battlefield of the American Revolutionary War. It is not a very large park, we did the entire walking tour of the battlefield and it was only about 2 miles per Bruce’s step counter.

There is not a lot to see at the park, mostly it is a walkway around the battlefield with signs explaining what happened at different points in the battle. Apparently the entire battle only lasted about one hour and per the information at the park it was a major turning point in the war. Some of the signs are very detailed as to things that happened and we did wonder where they got some of the information. Did someone write a report to a commanding officer detailing the battle or was it just word of mouth passed down through family members? I did read a sign at one spot where it mentioned someone that had researched the battle about a hundred years after the battle.

Walkway around battlefield

The walkway goes through lots of trees so it is nice and shady and a good way to get in a little exercise. We also visited the reconstructed log cabin of the Scruggs family. You could not go inside but you could look through the metal gates across the open doors. The family had 11 children and added on to the cabin through the years. The cabin that is currently there is just the original small cabin, however there is a picture in the brochure of what the larger cabin looked like.

On the way to visit the log cabin we came across a group of wild turkeys. They were much larger than the ones we saw down in Georgia.
