B and D – On the Road

Toledo, Ohio/St. Ignace, Michigan

We spent two days in the Toledo area. This was just a quick stop to give us time to catch up on laundry and restock groceries. Found some really good fresh vegetables especially the corn. There are corn fields all over the place and what they sell in the grocery store is fresh from local fields.

The first two days in St. Ignace we spent working on reservations for September and boy has it been a pain. Apparently getting reservation anywhere at a camp that is on one of the great lakes is out of the question. We finally gave up and Bruce moved us inland for a few days and then we will come back to the lakes area after Labor Day.

The worst nightmare has been getting our reservations handled for a trip out to Isle Royale National Park. This is one of the least visited national parks and they certainly don’t make it easy to get there. We will have to leave our RV at a RV park, drive 200 miles to another location and stay in a hotel, then catch a float plane to fly out there.

There is a lodge so we finally got reservations there at a pretty high price. The issue then was the transportation to the island and what to do with the RV depending on how we were getting to the island. None of the ferry schedules matched up with our lodge reservations, the ferries do not run every day. If we took the ferry from a location in Minnesota we could get there after taking an almost 8 hour trip on the way out but no ferries running on our return day. We then tried getting a float plane from that area and I think 30 minutes on the plane would be much better than the 8 hours on the ferry anyway.

This year they started flying out of a second location which was where we wanted to leave from as it was closest to the island which is in the northwest part of Lake Superior. We sent in a reservation request and got turned down with no explanation. Bruce called and talked with them them and after two days of back and forth calls and more reservation request we think we have a flight booked as they charged the credit card. Still waiting on an email confirmation. Unfortunately it means we have to drive back 200 miles into Michigan and leave from another location, it better be a great visit after all this hassle.

The weather here has been a nice change. It is in the mid fifties at night and has only a few times got into the mid seventies during the day.
