B and D – On the Road

Trip to Glacier

After leaving Theodore Roosevelt National Park we moved on to Glacier National Park. This was a three day drive for us since we don’t drive long days. Our first stop was in Billings Montana where we spent the late afternoon and evening restocking food and picking up prescriptions. Billings is big enough they have real grocery stories not little bitty stores with limited supplies. It has been a couple of weeks since we were able to stock up on groceries. Got some of our prescriptions filled and picked up cold medicine as I have developed a cold. Got the car and the RV washed. Of course the RV wash caused us to be a little late living the RV park the next day, it was almost 11 by the time we got on the road. The guy was supposed to be there at around 8 and said it would take an hour. It was almost 9 when he got there and it took almost 2 hours. He did a good job after washing with the soft wash on the pressure washer he also scrubbed the rims and hand washed all the windows. He was also way cheaper than the guy we used in Magnolia, Bruce tipped him good.

After Billings we stopped in Deer Lodge, Montana for one night as just a place to split up the drive. A very interesting KOA, I thought we were pulling into a construction business or junk yard area as we turned towards it. A very small camp, bordering on a creek with a pretty view of the mountains in the background. The camp however is not the best looking, very junky around the other edges. We picked the camp because of the location and the fact that it was still open and could handle our size. Many of the RV parks close by the middle of September in this area.

I did some research on KOAs while we were here and discovered they have a 3 brands of KOAs that they promote. There is the KOA Journey which is for people generally staying one night as they are passing through an area. They are usually close to a major road and have pull through sites.

Then there is the KOA Holiday which they promote as the place to set up a base camp while you are exploring an area. They have a few more amenities at the park and a little nicer. The last is the KOA Resort which is for taking vacations where they have planned activities for you and events led by the staff.

In Deer Lodge we were staying in just a plain old KOA. Important lesson learned, don’t stay at the plain old KOA. They are probably the ones that loose their KOA affiliation because they don’t keep up with the times.

Beautiful scenery as we got closer to Glacier.
