B and D – On the Road

Waco Area

We have moved to the Waco area for a few days. We are actually staying in West, Texas. The only good thing I can say about the RV park is that it is close to Slovacek’s, one exit down from us. They make fantastic kolaches and I have eaten enough to cure my cravings for awhile. If I lived in this area I would probably never make kolaches again, I would just go buy them at Slovacek’s. When I make them I make too many even when I cut my recipe in half.

We picked this spot as it was half way between Waco and Hillsboro. Bruce has a friend from high school that lives in Hillsboro and he works in Waco. We stoped here to visit with him and his wife. We had a great visit and they were able to reminisce about their school days and old friends.

The RV park appears to have been a former KOA campground that was allowed to run down. After checking in the lady leads us to our spot. First she informs Bruce that the internet is not working and she is not sure when it will work again as someone has stolen the equipment. On our way you pass several of the old cabins that look like someone is living in them full time from the amount of junk around them. The big board where the power comes in is sitting open with one of the metal coverings missing off one of the power boxes and the wiring and circuit breakers are sitting out exposed for anyone to grab. She leads us to our spot and the pole with the power box and water is laying over on the ground and the metal cover over the power box has been pulled off and the wiring is exposed. She makes excuses and said it was fine earlier that the person that had been there that morning must have damaged it when they left. She props it up and crams the stuff back in but Bruce told her we would not take the slot. She told us to move down a few spots where there was an opening.

We moved to the new spot which had a faucet that leaked very bad around the handle if you turned it all the way on. Bruce reported it to the office and they did not seem to care. Said they would report it to the owner but she probably would not do anything about it unless we came back and complained again and said it was a major problem. We just let it leak the whole time. Hopefully a high waterbill with get her attention.

They had apparently had a fire in one RV site previously and it was still not completely cleaned up. The rather rough roads were washed out in areas with orange cones marking the edge of the road. Lots of trashy old RVs with stuff piled all over the place. Tempting to call some type of county agency and report them and see if they will come out and do an inspection. Might be the only place some folks can afford but definitely not a safe place to stay if you have kids. Definitely will give them a bad review to keep someone else from going there.

While in this area we drove back up to Arlington one day to visit a camera store that we have shopped at before.  They always have a great selection and we can usually find anything we want.  Don’t see many real camera stores anymore.

While in Arlington we also went to a huge Christmas store and picked up a few decorations for the RV.  If we still had a house I might have spent lots of money there as we saw many things I liked.  We also drove to Fort Worth and had dinner at a Pappasito’s, the first one we have seen since we left on this trip.
