B and D – On the Road

Stephen C. Foster State Park

We moved to Stephen C. Foster State Park in Georgia.  It was just a very short drive from where we had been staying in Florida.  The park is located in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and the drive into the park was great.  Shortly after turning unto the road going up to the park we saw lots of wild turkeys.  A little further down the road and we got to see a young black bear along side the road.  Of course it darted into the woods before I could get a picture.  Also alligators and red headed woodpeckers.

We checked into the ranger station and were told to go pick the site we wanted and just hang the tag they gave us on the post in front of the site.  We discovered we were the only campers in the park.  I was quite impressed that Bruce had apparently reserved the entire camping area for just the two of us.  They did have air conditioned cottages on the other side of the main road and two of the cottages were occupied but they were far enough away you could not see them.

We got all set up while 4 deer watched us from a nearby site and then relaxed awhile.  Discovered they had cable connections for TV, not something you see at many state or national parks.  Discovered that there was no cellular signal in the area, phones simply said no service.  I read and Bruce napped.

Bruce grilled steaks for dinner while fighting the yellow flies and mosquitos.   After dinner we decided to go for a bike ride (sprayed us with lots of bug spray) and to our surprise a small black bear came strolling across the road in front of us.  Once again I was not fast enough with the camera.  We rode back to the ranger station, checked out the canoes, kayaks and small boats that were available to rent.  Also met one of the couples staying in the cottages and they recommended we take the ranger led boat tour of the swamp.   They had all kind of stories of the huge number of alligators in the water and the snakes they had seen.  They had not seen any bears so we told them where we had spotted them.

We made it back to our coach with out being eaten alive by the bugs.
