B and D – On the Road

Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

We decided to go tour the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge today.  We loaded up the car and selected the location in the GPS and took off.  Once again our GPS sent us out to the middle of nowhere.  There was a gate close to the spot and it had a tiny sign that said it was part of the wildlife refuge, however it was locked.  We did a little searching and found an actual street address on the internet and took off again.

We got to the visitor center and discover it was closed for July 4.  However there was a scenic road that was part of the refuge that was open so we decided to try the drive.  Lots of birds and of course alligators.  The drive went through some pretty trees with lots of Spanish moss.

Not sure

Much of the land in this area used to be rice fields and they had a system of canals for controlling the water.  They used something called rice field trunks to control the flow of the water, sort of like a a wooded gate they would take up and down.

We have decided to look up addresses in the future and use those in our GPS, not sure where it gets the location when you find it under point of interest.
