B and D – On the Road

Big Horn National Forest

We are in Buffalo, Wyoming for a few days and decided to take a drive through the Big Horn National Forest. We have been close to this area before on previous trips so we have visited sites like Devils Tower and had been to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Tetons National Park a few times.

The drive through Big Horn National Forest is a scenic drive where you are supposed to see animals. I guess there were all hiding out when we took our drive. We did see lots of RVs as the main road we were on is a major route to get over to Yellowstone. Saw a number of signs warning of moose and elk in the area but never saw either one.

We decided to turn off of the main road and take a dirt road down to Crazy Woman Canyon. There are a couple of stories as to how it got that name but no one knows for sure.

As you turn off the main road it looks like a fairly nice wide graded road. It goes down hill after you have crossed the first cattle guard.

It quickly goes from wide to being skinny with a few areas where cars can pull to the edge to let someone pass.

We only saw a few other cars while on the road and managed to be near spots where we could pull over to let them pass us. There were lots of areas for primitive camping along the road and a very nice stream that ran all the way down in the canyon. We did pass a few campers set up in the areas.

As we kept going down the road it got smaller and the canyon walls got higher and closer.

We stopped in one area to get out and walk around and take pictures.

The stream formed a little waterfall in this area.

We drove all the way through the canyon and came out on the other side where there were some homes and ranches.

When we got to the other side of the canyon the rock formations were very different looking.

Once we got out of the canyon we decided to turn around and head back through the canyon to the main road. Overall a pleasant drive but only saw a few birds and chipmunks along the way.
