B and D – On the Road

Hungry Horse Dam

On our last day at Glacier we decided to go check out the Hungry Horse Dam, we kept passing signs for it when we were out riding around. The dam went into operation in 1953 and is a hydro electric dam.

You can either drive across the dam or walk across we first walked across while Bruce gave me instructions on which way to run in case of an earthquake. They have a huge gantry on railroad tracks that moves across part of the dam so they can access heavy things with the crane installed in the gantry.

On the backside of the dam you could see the reservoir that was created and the big overflow hole.

While we out on the dam we were looking over the side by the gantry and discovered where all the fish are located. It is a shame you can’t fish from the dam as there were lots of big fish in the water.

The fish seemed to like being amongst on the tree debris that had accumulated next to the dam.

On the front side of the dam you are looking down the south fork of Flathead river.

After walking the dam we then went into the visitors center to check out the exhibits and see pictures of the construction of the dam and all kind of interesting info. Probably should have visited it first as the information was very helpful. We then drove across the dam and up beside the reservoir for a little ways and spotted an eagle nest, but no one was home.

The road on the other side of the dam wanders around for about 50 miles before getting to anything else so we turned back and went by to the RV park.
